What is the purpose of posting these kinds of comments to the net?
Jim, could you lighten up a little? Direct insults among a public
forum are not going to change anyone's mind one way or the other. They
are only going to make people mad... and people that are mad don't
discuss, they don't learn, they don't exchange ideas. They just get
mad. A little sarcasm with a smile is one thing.... direct insults
are quite another. The information he posted is available to anyone,
he didn't "steal it", it wasn't "bought from a spy". If you are going
to get mad at someone, get mad at the government that releases that
information to anyone that wants it. The fact that it is considered to
be one of the freedoms that this country is built around shouldn't
matter. Argue with the FEDS not Parnass... let us all know how you
make out.

Subject: Amateur Radio Exams for PC (AutoExam)
Seeing all the questions about the Mac' Hyper-card stack that is
available for brushing up on the Amateur exams reminded me that I
have not yet released my version for the IBM-PC family...
Is anyone interested in this type of thing? Here are some
specs:
AutoExam: Generates an exam from Novice to Extra. Different
version *every* time. Answers to a particular question are also randomized!!
This program (at this time) does NOT use any graphics, or special colors.
This allows it to be accessed via packet radio (i.e., under DOSGATE).
The program can be used interactivly, or to print exams and answer keys.
It can also print a study guide.
Limitations: Not currently using graphics, so some questions that
deal with drawings (schematics) are *crude* to say the least (I am currently
working on makeing a graphics version of this.
Runs under MS-DOS (version 3.x or newer). OS/2 version upon next compile.
Last years question pools... Novice to Extra... need to obtain the
new question pools... (this is not too much of a limitiation as most questions
in last years pools *very* similar to the new pools.
I am not in the distribution business, the software currently has
a 'shareware' type of label on it... I am about to remove this 'restriction',
that was actually placed on it to deter requests for me to send copies
of the program to each individual...
Also I have AutoCW, with runs under DOS or OS/2. This program makes use of
the computers hardware for timing and requires NO calibration routines or
other fear of bad timing... It is NOT a flashy graphic-color program, but
a good tool for generating either random code or keyboard/file driven code.
If there is an interest in this stuff, I will make it more available
to the usenet community..

Arthur Godfrey was K4LIB ("Love In Bloom" was supposed to have been one of
his favorite "phun-etics")
News to me about Clayton Moore... I'm interested in that, too!

Just a short query about the Yaesu FT-470 that I just bought a few weeks
ago. Does anyone know of a way to open up the receiver in the 450 mHz
range? I have learned to toggle extended receive for the 144 mHz range
but have no clue for the rest, if such is possible.
AND, my quick take on the radio for those interested: Do what I didn't do,
use each of the dual band hand helds for a few minutes after talking to an
owner of each to really feel out the features and weaknesses. I bought the
470 for its size and sensitivity (I backpack with my HT for thrills), but I
pay some price in intermod (just discovered). Its a nice radio and I would
buy it again, but I now see that there are some clear differences in the
available brands which my salesperson led me to believe didn't exist.
Anyone interested in my detailed thoughts on the Yaesu, contact me directly.
Nice bboard. I just found it.

Official Observer is an ARRL APPOINTMENT. The appointment is confirmed
by the ARRL when recommended by the SECTION MANAGER.
See the "masthead" page of QST for your SECTION MANAGER if you don't
know who it is. (I don't have a copy here at the moment.)
>What are the requirements?
As far as I know the requirements are [probably] a license and
[definitely] willingness to do the job. It is serious business.
You are responsible for the reports you file.

The limiting factor in every doppler unit I've seen or head tell of
in switching noise, with antenna gain a close second. Friend K8DJR
has managed, through extensive mods, to clean up a Dick Smith box to
the point where he chases the beam until he's one mile from the fox,
and then switches to doppler.
The Datong boxes are much better, with a usable range of 10+ miles.
One friend has a protoype based on a special mil-spec Datong product
that uses a different method of antenna switching and bearing calculation
and has an even greater range. (No, you don't want it. The finished unit
costs over $8,000)
Successful doppler users don't just plug-and-run. The most successful hunter
I know has all his stuff built into an RF-tight enclosure with switchable
preamp and attenuation, adjustable S-meter and a few other bits and pieces.
This attention to detail pays off.
I have not been too successful with my Double-Ducky experiments yet, but
I'm still working on antenna and switching designs. Has anyone out there
had any success with the phase-sensitive L/R indicators, as per the
original QST articles?
